YOUR LETTERS
February 3, 2010
In response to the Jan. 24 editorial “House, Senate Need New Direction”:
As I remember it, public service workers were the only group that stood up and gave back nearly a billion dollars in savings to state coffers. With this help, Democrats in the General Assembly were able to pass a state budget. The governor and most in her party took a convenient walk away from their responsibilities.
Far from perfect, that budget attempted to balance government’s responsibility to protect individuals in a time of crisis with a reasonable demand that the wealthiest in our state contribute just a little bit more in income taxes to help solve our crisis. Now, revenues have slowed still further and the governor wants to slash aid to cities and towns. She wants to deny dental care to adults, and to eliminate another 5,000 Connecticut jobs.
Our state cannot afford more of the governor’s failed policies. We need new ideas that will get us out of recession and bring back jobs.
The Courant would rather bash the only people who have stepped up to the plate.
