It’s not surprising that the public and policy-makers are hearing revelations confirming troubling accusations that have been levied at insurance companies over the years [Page 1, June 25, "Stinging Words For Health Insurers"].

What’s important is that these disclosures be taken seriously — and that new health care reform measures finally put an end to dubious practices of an industry that has long put profits over people.

While Connecticut is reputedly the insurance capital of the world, we now have the opportunity to show the nation how health coverage really should be done.

The two health care bills on Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s desk, SustiNet and the Healthcare Partnership bill, use new models for health care delivery and cost savings.

These plans are still based on good old-fashioned market-driven principles of competition and efficiency.

But what’s different about them is that these plans are designed to benefit both consumers and the bottom line. Neither the public or business is sacrificed. It’s a win-win.

Isn’t it time that we moved forward into the future by learning from the mistakes of the past?
