This is no time to cut health care office

I am appalled Gov. M. Jodi Rell has decided to close the Office of the Healthcare Advocate. Once again the people’s needs are shamelessly paved over to make a smooth ride for the insurance companies.

The Office of the Healthcare Advocate is available for anyone filing insurance claims who has been denied treatment. In my case, representatives were incredibly helpful as I was fighting my insurance company, which denied me intravenous antibiotics for Lyme disease.

Among other things, I had three letters from infectious-disease specialists and a Lyme-literate physician requesting intravenous antibiotics.

My insurance company said, “This unfortunate woman who does not have Lyme disease is suffering from an unknown illness.” I was incredulous. But I have come to find that claim denial is common from insurance companies.

In such difficult economic times, having the Office of the Healthcare Advocate is crucial. Their advocacy is free, helping many people successfully appeal their claims and receive treatment. The alternative for people without the financial means to pay for medical treatment is grim.

I am grateful to the dedicated staff of the Office of the Healthcare Advocate and hope Gov. Rell will reconsider closing this office.
