SEBAC Offers Principles and Purposes to Governor Rell, Legislative Leaders

by Matt O'Connor on February 3rd

Today, leaders of the State Employee Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC) sent a letter to Governor M. Jodi Rell and leadership of both chambers in the Connecticut General Assembly to clarify their principles and purposes in addressing the economic crisis gripping our state.

The letter is the product of discussions between and among leaders of the coalition’s thirteen unions on how its members can be part of a comprehensive solution to weather the current economic storm, and place Connecticut on a sounder footing for the future. The statement reiterates much of the coalition’s message over the past six months; that State public service workers are ready to help solve this crisis, but are not ready to sign on to a program that makes economic recovery more difficult or piles on more pain for Connecticut’s struggling middle-class.

The statement also provides Connecticut’s elected leaders a broad set of principles the coalition is advocating be part of any comprehensive solution to closing the current budget deficit. With Governor Rell scheduled to deliver her biennial budget address tomorrow at noon, coalition leaders felt it was important to offer these recommendations to help inform the choices she and all elected officials are considering.
