For the first time in more than 4½ years in office, Gov. M. Jodi Rell will make a live, televised address to the state Monday night to warn citizens about impending cuts in the state budget.
Rell has asked the major television networks for time to speak during the 6 p.m. newscasts, and she expects to receive permission from them all.
Billed as an address on the economy, Rell will speak for about five minutes from the Executive Mansion in Hartford’s West End.
“It will be letting people know they should expect a budget that will be different from anything they’ve seen before — and the reasons for that,” said Christopher Cooper, Rell’s chief spokesman. “It will be where we are today and what do we need to do to make tomorrow the way we want it to be.”
The speech will begin at about 6:01 p.m. but will not include the full details of the budget, which will be released to the legislature on Wednesday.
“We’re in the worst economic straights of 50 years or more – some would say 70 years since the Great Depression,” Cooper said.
